Get the Caravan on Your Station

If you can't find Beale Street CaravanŽ on a station in your local area perhaps Dan Cappello of Pittsburgh, PA can provide some inspiration. Dan writes:

"I first heard of the program at last year's Handy Awards. Then in the quarterly Blues Foundation booklet I read more about the program.

I told myself that Pittsburgh needs to have the program on. So I wrote a 1 page letter discussing, Attn: Blues Fan, over 200 stations nationwide have this program but we do not. So please contact WYEP and WDUQ by calling and speaking to Rosemary Welsh. I went to see James Cotton at Moondog's, the local Blues bar in Pittsburgh. I passed out 50 copies to the fans in attendance.

Then I called Rosemary Welsh a week later and left a message to put the program on the air. Then I called WDUQ and spoke with the program manager. He told me he was not interested and to contact WYEP.

I did not hear back from Rosemary so I called again and left another message to consider the B. S. C. program. I waited approximately 1 month and I called again. And spoke with Rosemary and told her that a lot of Blues fans want the program on WYEP. I told her that over 200 stations nationwide have the program but Pittsburgh does not and we are a great Blues town.

She told me that she will be deciding shortly between 2 Blues programs. About 3 weeks later Beale Street CaravanŽ was on the air Sat night, 12-1. Yes my persistence paid off!"

Hats off to Dan Cappello and a free year's membership in The Blues Foundation for all his persistence, help and hard work on behalf of Beale Street CaravanŽ.
